But through all the physical and psychological training he endured for this fight he never lost his humanity, when others would have certainly not shown any mercy for him while he was falling down. If you get the special edition DVD/Blu-Ray, there is a commentary track by William Friedkin, and? this whole scene is explained. He does mention that there is a constant motif of not only Father Karras's mother descending, but of Father Karras himself ascending. It's honestly one of the best commentary tracks on any movie to date. You should check it out.

This whole scene is amazing. The almost total silence accompanied by him uttering "mom" as he's calling out to her and that whole undertone that's being expressed that his mother is now in hell and that he could not do - in fact, did not do - enough to save? her. The subway stairs were a great metaphoric image to illustrate his mother descending into hell and that damn face that flashes on the screen seeming to be a confirmation that she's utterly doomed. And then the scream breaking the silence.

I see why you would draw that conclusion. The demon did beat Father Merrin but remember when Karras tries to revive him but is unsuccessful, then he tells the demon to come within him. He wants to hurt and possibly kill Reagan but his face changes back to himself and then sacrifices his body, sending? the demon off. In that aspect, to me, the demon was beaten.

Interesting. I saw the Exorcist for the first time in 86" and When Merrin said There is only one. I thought he was referring to all the voices coming from Reagan. It was sad to see that the Demon after all those years finally beat Merrin at the end. Which to me leaves the Story un finished. The 2nd movie was ...a disgrace to the first one. ? But the 3rd was interesting. I haven't seen any of the most recent, but I do know they take place before the original.
