was your dad on the Exeter? reading about sailor's stories in combat, i'd say there would be very few experiences more terrifying, there is no tree nor rock to hide behind, and neither any earth to dig a hole for cover. To add to all that you'd? be faced with complete human carnage in a confined space, then if you're unlucky enough to sink then it's time to face the sharks and starvation.

I only take an interest in this battle as my father was in it, and growing up with WW2 ships and Naval talk at home as a small boy my fathers account of this battle stuck in my brain? even at a young age. All men of all nationalities have the same opinion of it....it was a complete fiasco and futile attempt...they were just cannon fodder.

By the sounds of it Wellbran you are certainly keen on naval engagements.. you should look for a book "Last stand of the tin can sailors" on ebay. This excellent? book is made up of graphic eyewitness accounts during the battle of samar which turned out to be a suicide mission for a handful of US destroyers pitted against the biggest battleships and cruisers of the IJN. In short, the battle of samar is the american equivalent to our "Kokoda".

As with most battles in both world wars, whether it was the army, navy or airforce, we were always used as battering rams and achieved results. I've got family that served in the AIF and the RAAF in New Guinea/Borneo.. they all said the same thing - it was always the Aussies taking hits for the sake of preserving American and British prestige. ?

Also as your Father the men that did not make it haunted my Father all of his life both in the Sea battle, and in captivity through disease torture starvation and just worked to death He had a built in "guilt" that he had made it when others did not, but someone told me once that he very nearly did not make it.

I believe several years ago there was a? court case in honover germany that lsted many months in regard to many german companies that did use lsave labour and from what I gather it was successfull and there was compensation to slave labourers awarded Germany has done many things to meet and engage its history in that period of its history and you have to admire them for it...unlike Japan who in this videos case even fail to aknowledge the EXISTANCE of camps in japan.

the royal navy has numerous ships that gave outstanding service and had proud war records. the illustrious for example took out three battleships and two cruisers just in the taranto raid and suffered very severe? damage on more than one occasion. unfortunately like most WW2 ships she was scrapped and mostly forgotten.

60 odd cruisers with another 30 plus added. 6 years of war often close to land based airpower or without air cover. the ships could take heavy? damage and dish it out too. the one really good thing with british cruisers was keeping torpedoes,( american cruisers did away with torpedoes which was a disastrous decision during the solomons campaign.)

I thought the english were supposed the be the masters of the naval arts.? As they have been world renown for. Ever since the 100-gun ships of the day to now apparently. And, time and money dont mean anything. The japanese built ships of outrageous proportions, and they were pretty smart at naval warfare. And we still sunk their entire navy with inferior treaty ships. I honestly wish i could have seen the N3 class of battleships come to be though.

Fifty built, Fifty sunk? Lol. English cruisers were cool, but? were horribly outdated. And the new ones were piss poor. Comfortable though. Only the US built a good treaty ship. We had the least naval losses of all the allies who came under attack, and we decimated the forces we came across. I wouldn't chalk it up to skill though.

I partly agree with you, he did say Duran was not in good shape for the fight, but he used the right tactics and the end of the day you can only beat what they put in front of you, its not his fault that duran was not on top fitness that was durans fault. My grandfather Jan de Vries was aboard HMS de Ruyter. Sergeant Stoker. After being picked up after 24 hours floating in the sea transported back to Java and from the to the Birma railroad. Back in? the Netherlands in 1946.

Since video referreing France has won more grand slams and been awarded more tries that in the past would have been overruled? by the anglosaxon refs...
