No, don't think there's any triplet figure. Seems as though he's playing what is a harp figure on the original recording. The harp seems to only have straight quarter notes at that moment. If the pianist seems slightly rocky in his playing at that spot, just look at the video and you'll notice he has a page-turn right at that moment. Self-executed page-turns, as any pianist can attest, can be deadly for? one's physical and mental stability.

Good comment. As an old-timer myself I can appreciate the gravity of your opinion. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about her song-writing, singing or professionalism. One reviewer did bemoan the fact that many of her newer songs are too short, but he probably is like me in? that he just wants to songs to never end.

Willi & The Red Hot Peppers, then John Stewart, then Elvis Costello... so ... how I (apparently) know nothing of either of them, I'm not sure. Yeah, I like how Bruce goes a long way to show how similar the two men are before circumstances divide them. I remember reading somewhere that the end of Galveston Bay originally had a far darker ending, but Bruce didn't like it and changed it to how it is on the album. I thought I read about it in? the "Songs" book, but I just checked and it doesn't mention it. :/

I think they were on the same side ... Billy, I do not believe, was in that unit. It's ironic that he is driven to attack this simply on the ethnicity, without any? knowledge of his background. Billy would have killed his ally, unknowlingly. The song is great on so many levels.

I always thought they were on the same side during the war...the first verse says Le Bin Son fought "side by side with the Americans". I agree with you about the rest of the song; at the end, Billy seems to accept that life has changed, and the only thing he can do is come to terms and live with it.?

Thank you, too. I definitely agree it's poetry. And the great thing about poetry is that it's open to interpretation. I always have believed that what's more important is how a song touches someone, than it's "official" meaning. I think there is that theme of "live and let live" in the song. I like how it ends with Billy perhaps being a little bit more understanding, but not going through some Hollywood motions, where he and Le Bin Son are best buddies at song's? end.

Thanks for the reply. By the fact that you offered your interpretation, for me, proves it is poetry. The reason billy put his K Bar in his pocket is unknown but the answer matters. It makes us think; therefore, we have poetry. I think right along the same lines as you. The fact that the men are fathers is huge for me. They are grown up, more grown than they were as young soldiers who wanted to kill each other. Now,? live and let live?

I don't know if this song is so much about the poetry of their humanity, but about racial tension, racism and cultural ignorance. At song's end, "Billy" realizes he was going to do the wrong thing. As for why he realizes this, and whether he was acting more for his family's sake than out of concern for "Le Bin Son,"? hard to say, but perhaps he realizes that "Le Bin Son" is a father, like him.
