Fuck emo. PUNK? forever :D
By: achickensandwich. on 13 May 12, 00:55:23
I wouldn't follow genre labels to closely. I mean, look what the fuck happened to RnB.?
By: fakeis751. on 06 May 12, 23:41:03
Punk was already emotional.? Listen to Black Flag's "Damaged". The goddamned title itself is about personal pain
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 24 Apr 12, 09:19:56
It's pretty fun to? classify (nerd, I know), but I might just try that. Thank you :)
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 09:09:59
Since you are an? artist, I think you should try doing as little classifying as possible for 6 months or so and see if you feel like you have evolved more freely and creatively. It may help, and if not, no harm done :)
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 09:01:29
Listening to and feeling the music is important to me. When I categorize music I feel like I am telling other people what they are hearing. It took me almost 12 years in different bands, doing DIY tours and playing local gigs in between them before I got signed to an Indie label. Too this day, when people ask "what kind of music do you play?" It stumps me or I just make up a genre on the spot. Stupid ones like "ExciteAbilly" or "love-hate? fusion" depending on what band I was in at the time lol
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 24 Apr 12, 09:00:28
On the post-hardcore, noise rock and post-punk bands,? sure.
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 08:18:38
Do you ever place the? "indie rock" label on an artist?
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 24 Apr 12, 08:15:58
Well, emo/post-hardcore is a label that is quite wide. There are several forms of intensity and experimentation can be punk meets jazz or funk-dub or whatever you may like. So in this case it's not really confining, but I see what you? mean.
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 08:14:14
I was going to act disappointed in your return to homosexual slurs but I didn't want you to start thinking I was? upset or offended. Plus, yours was a funny response.
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 08:03:46
In short, I place no importance on finding a genre to squeeze? an artists self expression into.
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 08:00:44
It is a damn shame that it is so common, but is seems that defining a? work of art restricts and suppresses the true nature of the expression. This, in turn, can confine the artists work in the eyes of the observer. It is hard for an artists work to evolve for the observer when there are preconceived notions or labels confining their work. So, in time, the artists work is only partially appreciated by some and at different levels for each observer who makes the mistake of micro-classificarion
By: alergicturd. on 24 Apr 12, 07:04:30
Lmao Obviously not, judging? by your post. zing!
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 24 Apr 12, 05:30:37
Well, Guided by Voices do not follow MY criteria, but you are free to think they are emo if you like. I noticed most, if not all the bands you cited were jangle pop band. Although it is the white mans blues, and certainly a predecessor to emo lyrically, I do not consider these bands as emo (and if you think my criteria is? valid, neither should you).
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 24 Apr 12, 05:26:45
Well, to me, and to well, large quantities of the music world emo is characterized by experimentation within the hardcore format? (and is thererefore nearly synonymous with post-hardcore) and emotional lyrics performed with massive intensity (I mean sure, MOST punk music or offshoots of it features intense vocals, but most punk bands are not Rites of Spring or Drive Like Jehu).
By: bignads5. on 24 Apr 12, 05:02:51
do all queers use big? words?
By: alergicturd. on 23 Apr 12, 23:11:11
Nicely put and well done, but you only cast your doubt on the stone roses and did not site any of the so called "emo? characteristics" they would need to make your list. Bare in mind that music critics don't create art so emo didn't suddenly exist on the first day a critic coined the phrase "emotional rock or core". This would mean that any band that possesses or possessed your "emo characteristics" should be considered. Also, why should I disregard those other bands? your court amigo :)
By: alergicturd. on 23 Apr 12, 20:42:55
You lured me into a false sense of security by pretending to be a one-trick-pony, and then pulled the old bait and switch. Not only did you change gears from "gay" to "dickhead" without missing a beat, but? your delivery had just a hint of emotion without showing even a trace of homophobia. This tactic not only put me in my place but simultaneously refuted any allegations of homophobia while calling into question the validity of claims that you have no feelings. My hat is off to you sir.
By: bignads5. on 23 Apr 12, 15:59:26
you're a dickhead ?
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 23 Apr 12, 10:47:50
"attributing the? birth of emo to Guided by Voices,? The Plimsouls, The Smiths, or Stone Roses" I simply pointed out that this was a silly arguement.
By: alergicturd. on 23 Apr 12, 09:51:39
The use of genre identifiers to corral groups of musicians into one easy-to-use category is folly. While it makes it easier for insecure kids to get an idea of the music a band plays, there is simply too much grey area and It is rare for rock journalists to agree. They lazily overuse the? terminology as if it had real meaning when it does not. It is nothing but fabricated lexicon that trivializes artistic expression, belittles artists and debauches their art.
By: alergicturd. on 23 Apr 12, 08:59:30
I suppose english might not be your native language. I didn't say the smiths or stone roses were influential to emo or that they pioneered emo. So, it was strange that you said I had. Yet, it was stranger still that you implied I had used "pioneered" and "influenced" in my post as though they were synonymous. If you concentrate, you should notice that I didn't use either of those two words. I informed you that SOME PEOPLE thought that bands? other than rites and embrace had spawned emo.
By: GrungeRockabilly. on 23 Apr 12, 05:35:43
No, it is a fact that The Smiths influenced the first and third wave of? emo.
By: alergicturd. on 23 Apr 12, 01:08:32
I don't think the stone roses started emo but my friend William does. Not you nor any other human has been appointed as the official that decides what bands are emo because there is no such official. So? we have a difference of OPINION. Further more, I didn't say the Smiths were an influence to the emo genre and there IS a HUGE difference between pioneering emo and influencing it. Several bands dating back to Chuck Berry have influenced emo artists and therefore influenced the genre. follow me?
