I'm aware of the debates over this book, and both sides have a point. I can see? this as a cautionary tale if we look at this as the boy's story instead of the tree's. If you look closely, the boy never seems truly happy as he gets older (especially as a middle-aged man, wanting to escape and sail away because he's "too old and sad to play". So you could read this as saying "do nothing but take and you'll never be really content."
