Two English idioms I never understood, and still don't really, when I first began learning English were: 1. "It's like comparing apples and oranges" - why wouldn't you compare apples and oranges? They're two different things! Ones red, the others orange, etc. 2. "He wants his cake and to eat it to" - why shouldn't he eat his cake? It's his cake! Let him eat his cake! I can understand the idioms that at least make logical sense,? but some mean the opposite of their literal meaning :(

If you've done a video on the 1-1-1 doubling rule, it would've helped here. For those who don't know, the 1-1-1 doubling rule is: if a word has 1 syllable, 1 vowel, and 1 consonant before the end, double the last consonant when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel. For instance: bet has one syllable, one vowel, and one? consonant at the end, ergo double the "t" when adding a suffix, such as bet + ing = betting. Thank you for this lesson. For some reason some teachers are accepting just an apostrophe at the end? of a noun that ends in "s." instead of the proper apostrophe-s as you have shown. YAY! ~Fellow English Teacher Now, if we can only teach '80s and '90s instead of 80's and 90's. :-)

Really impressive Valen! But why were you saying /aposhtrophe/. The 's'? makes the sound of 's' or 'sh'? Or is it just your habit to pronounce 'sh' for 's'? Anyway, thanks. I had this problem of pronouncing James's (Jamesis). I wasn't sure we Pakistanis were right in pronouncing like you did. But now I know we were.

@DanielCMM Thats a tricky one, you're right. I've always wondered how to pronounce apostrophes appropriately. But I suppose you'd just have to double the s somehow. Like, Horse's should? just be pronounced as Horses and Horses's should be pronounced Horses-s. Actually, what I just said doesn't make sense... But that's just my guess. :)

Though it's not incorrect designating 'my' a possessive pronoun in English, I suggest treating it as a possessive adjective (which is also correct?and perhaps more widely used), because in the grammar of other languages (e.g. Romance) possessive pronouns refer to those that replace a possessive adjective+noun pair (e.g. {my father}, not {your father} =>? {mine}, not {yours}). I think using 'adjective' instead of 'pronoun' would ease the translation of the concept. Kindly, ESL apprentice :)

I didn't know that 'passive'? could be used to avoid sort of responsibility.. I used to stick to add 'by someone or sbd' at the end of the passive sentence., Thank you, This lecture is of great help :D
