I recently prescribed it for a 17? year old Paso Fino mare that was laminitic, with a body score of 8 out of 9. She had been treated unsuccessfully by another veterinarian for about a year with phenylbutazone, thyroid supplementation and a low glycemic index diet. When euthanasia was recommended, the client contacted us for a second opinion.

All we did for this mare was radiograph the front feet and prescribe therapeutic shoeing and trimming, eliminate the thyroid supplementation, and place her? on Standard Process' Equine Metabolic Support. After two months, her body score was down to 6 out of 9 and she was much more comfortable. After six months, she was able to be ridden lightly and her body score was 5 out of 9.

It should be noted that the mare's preprandial insulin level taken on our first visit was 2300. After two months it was down to less than 300. It is now a year and a half since we started her treatment, and she is being used for trail riding. We have continued her on a low glycemic index ration, and have? cut the Equine Metabolic Support to half the recommended dose. Rick Tully, Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic

I see? no evidence that the lower insulin levels had anything to do with this product but tend to to think it was more diet & exercise related. Would be nice if you stated what the diet & exercise entailed. Supposedly, Cinnamon lowers blood sugar levels -- rarely the problem in these horses. The problem is the high insulin levels. Licorice root while effective with ulcer protection & healing can cause pseudo hyperaldosteronism, --dangerous for a metabolically challenged horse. I'm not impressed.

You provide important service with organic herbs, but I must take exception to the assumptions.The single most important treatment of EMS in horses is a low sugar/low starch appropriate diet, minerals balanced to the hay, plus adequate exercise. There are no magic bullets. Feeding a "supportive supplement" is a lot like giving a diabetic human metformin in one hand? and a donut in the other. The unfortunate horses at the end of the study were still VERY hyperinsulinemic. clougherBScBVSc

How do you know that the product had an effect vs. diet and exercise? Were all animals on? a diet and exercise management plus the product? The animals remained hyperinsulinemic after the prescribed management and treatment with the product. At 2 months, insulin was ~400 uIU/ml with no change at 4 months. Target insulin, after a hay meal should be ~10-20 uIU/ml. Your graphs do show that the horse is not hyperglycemic, unlike humans.
